Stories of innovative regulatory solutions for Albertans and happenings at the Alberta Utilities Commission
The AUC was created on April 17, 1915 as the Board of Public Utility Commissioners which was renamed the Public Utility Commission, then became the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board before becoming the Alberta Utilities Commission in 2008. Over the course of 105 years of service, the AUC and its predecessors have had a rich history of protecting the public interest in Alberta, including the regulation of everything from electricity and natural gas to telephone lines, railway tariffs, milk, ambulance services and apple imports from British Columbia. Today, the focus of the AUC mandate is on regulating the electricity and natural gas sectors to protect social, economic and environmental interests of Alberta where competitive market forces do not.
The commission began its operations amid uncertainty and turmoil. Now in 2020, as we face the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic and an unprecedented time of uncertainty, it is of utmost importance that we continue our mission to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of Alberta’s utility services. Through our strong history of public service and through the resilience of our province, we will tackle today’s challenges together and continue to deliver innovative regulatory solutions for Alberta. See the AUC Chair’s April 17th update on the impact of COVID-19.
