The codes provided are subject to Rule 004 requirements in order to provide timely and accurate tariff billing information
Many of the interactions and communications between owners of electric or natural gas distribution systems and the retail service providers are done electronically. These participants agreed to establish a standardized method of conveying information through a standardized method set out in Rule 004: Alberta Tariff Billing Code.
Standard codes are used by owners of electric or natural gas distribution systems to provide timely and accurate tariff billing information to retail service providers in a standardized format. These codes include tariff rate codes, tariff cross reference codes, component type codes, one-time charge codes and miscellaneous determinant codes. These standard codes help the retail service providers to bill their end-use electricity and natural gas customers in a timely and accurate manner also.
The owners of electric and natural gas distribution systems are responsible for maintaining the accuracy of their standard codes. AUC maintains the repository of standard codes of the owners of electric and natural gas distribution systems so that the retail service providers have one central place to access the current standard codes.
The AUC regularly engages with stakeholders to identify improvements and revisions that need to be made to Rule 004 to keep the rule relevant and reflective of the requirements of the retail electricity and natural gas market.
Another standard code used by the industry is the municipality code. Alberta Municipal Affairs is the source of record for municipality codes. The AUC posts a copy of the latest Alberta version of Municipal Codes on this website.
