Application 28906-A001

Hearing expected to take place in late fall, 2024.

Overview

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), the independent utilities regulator will be considering an application by Enfinite for the construction and operation of a 100-megawatt battery storage facility called Laramide Battery Storage Facility. This application has been filed under Section 13.01 and 18 of the Hydro and Electric Energy Act.

Additional information about the application:

  • The Project would be located at SE-18-19-27-W4M in Foothills County, Alberta, northwest of the AltaLink owned Foothills 237S Substation, on previously disturbed land owned by Enfinite.
  • The Project is expected to be interconnected through a 240-kilovolt (kV) transmission line to the Foothills 237S Substation.
  • During periods of low demand on the electrical system, the Laramide BSF would pull electricity from the system and charge the batteries. The batteries would add reliability to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES), including responding at times of higher demand, or during outages of other system elements.
  • The total name plate capacity of the Project is 100 MW. The batteries can discharge at a maximum rate of 100 MW for four (4) hours providing a total storage capacity of 400 MWh.

Components of the Project would include:

  • 105 lithium-ion battery modules with inverters
  • One 240-kV transformer
  • 27-kV to 34.5-kV transformers
  • Control building (with associated protection and controls equipment)
  • Fencing
  • Access and internal roadways
  • Underground power/control cables
